Musical Paragraph

A Musical Paragraph is a musical structure that is much like a written paragraph. Within that paragraph you have a series of sentences all geared towards one singular idea. The same thing is true here. We have a bunch of musical sentences that are all gathered around one musical idea or movement. Typically one hears a shift in musical tone or a shift in the music. A good example of this is right at 00:38 in D’Arienzo’s “Nada Mas” where we hear a shift towards a new musical idea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJjw96qCEJ0). This is also a Type 4 pause, which is characterized by “bum”-“ditta”-“bum-bum”. That “bum-bum” is the marker for the Musical Paragraph, or one musical idea ending and another beginning. Typically in Tango or Vals song there are anywhere between 6 and 9 Musical Paragraphs. In Milonga there may be anywhere between 8 and 15.
