The short version
- There are no advertising or tracking cookies on this site, and no cookie banner, because nothing here needs your consent before it loads.
- Our visitor statistics are counted on our own server, with IP addresses anonymised and hashed. No Google Analytics, no Facebook pixel.
- Fonts and scripts are served from our own server. Your browser does not contact Google or any other font or script service when you open a page.
- YouTube videos only load when you press play. Until then you see a placeholder from our own server.
- We never sell your data. We only pass it on to the services that are needed to run your membership, listed below.
What we collect and why
Visiting the site
The site is hosted on a server in the USA. When you open a page, that server receives the technical data every browser sends: IP address, date and time, the page requested, the referring page, and browser and operating system. This is needed to deliver the page and to keep the site secure. Server logs are NOT kept by our host at all. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in running a secure website).
Visitor statistics
We count visits with WP Statistics, which runs on our own server. It sets no cookies. IP addresses are anonymised and then hashed, so they cannot be traced back to you. A rough country or city is looked up from a database stored on our own server; nothing is sent to an outside service. Statistics records are deleted after 180 days. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (understanding which lessons are used, so we can improve them).
Your account and membership
When you sign up we store your name, email address, username, password (encrypted, we cannot read it), your membership level, and the history of your payments and renewals. We use this to give you access to the lessons you have paid for, to send you emails about your account (receipts, renewals, password resets), and to answer you when you write to us. Memberships are handled by the MemberPress plugin on our own server. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (the contract between us) and Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR for invoices and payment records we must keep by law.
Payments
Card payments are processed by Stripe, Inc., 354 Oyster Point Boulevard, South San Francisco, CA 94080, USA. When you pay, your card details go straight to Stripe in the USA; they never touch our server and we never see or store your card number. Stripe’s payment script loads on the sign-up and checkout pages only. Stripe is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. See Stripe’s privacy policy. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
Lesson videos and where you left off
Lesson videos are stored with Amazon Web Services and delivered through Amazon CloudFront (Amazon Web Services, Inc., Seattle, USA). To stream a video, your browser connects to CloudFront, which receives your IP address and the technical data listed above. AWS is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. See the AWS privacy notice.
When you are logged in, the video player remembers where you stopped in each video and which videos you have finished, so you can pick up where you left off. The site also keeps a list of the last 30 lessons you opened, which powers “Continue where you left off” and the progress bars on the learning paths. This is stored with your account on our own server and is never shared. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (it is part of the service you signed up for).
You can wipe all of it at any time with the Clear my history button under “Your viewing history” on your account page. That deletes your recently viewed list and every saved video position at once.
Emails
Emails from the site (receipts, password resets, account messages) are sent through Google’s Gmail service (Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA) from tango@tangotopics.com. Google processes the email address and the contents of those emails to deliver them. If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
If you write to us, we use your message and email address only to answer you.
Cookies
This site only uses cookies that are needed for it to work. Under § 25(2) TDDDG these do not need your consent.
- wordpress_test_cookie: set on the login page to check that your browser accepts cookies. No personal data, removed when you close the browser.
- wordpress_logged_in_… and wordpress_sec_…: keep you logged in. They last two days, or two weeks if you tick “Remember me”, and are removed when you log out.
- MemberPress cookies: keep your sign-up and checkout working and remember your membership session.
- Stripe cookies: on the sign-up and checkout pages only, set by Stripe for fraud prevention.
There are no advertising, analytics or social media cookies.
Things that only load when you ask for them
YouTube videos
Some lessons and articles include YouTube videos. These are shown as a placeholder served from our own server, and nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. When you press play, your browser connects to YouTube (Google Ireland Limited) through youtube-nocookie.com, and YouTube receives your IP address and can set cookies or similar storage on your device. By pressing play you agree to this. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and § 25(1) TDDDG (your consent, given by the click). See Google’s privacy policy.
Translating the site
The language menu at the top of the page lets you read the site in another language. The translation itself is done by Google Translate. Nothing is sent to Google until you pick a language from the menu; when you do, your browser loads Google Translate and the text of the page is sent to Google to be translated, along with your IP address. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (you choose to use it). If you do not use the menu, Google is not contacted.
Who we share your data with
We do not sell your data and we do not share it with advertisers. The only outside services that receive personal data are the ones named above, each only for its own job:
- Stripe (USA), for payments.
- Amazon Web Services (USA), for streaming lesson videos.
- Google LLC (USA, Gmail), for sending account emails.
- Google (YouTube and Translate), only when you press play on a YouTube video or pick a language.
Where these companies act on our behalf we have data processing agreements with them. Because the site runs on servers in the USA, your data is transferred to and processed in the USA. These transfers are covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the EU standard contractual clauses (Art. 45 and 46 GDPR).
How long we keep your data
- Your account details: for as long as you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete them, apart from what the law requires us to keep.
- Invoices and payment records: 8 to 10 years, as German tax and commercial law requires (§ 147 AO, § 257 HGB).
- Your viewing history and video positions: until you clear them or your account is deleted.
- Visitor statistics: 180 days.
- Emails you send us: as long as needed to deal with your request, then deleted unless the law requires us to keep them.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- get a copy of the personal data we hold about you (Art. 15 GDPR), including as an exported file (Art. 20 GDPR);
- have incorrect data corrected (Art. 16 GDPR). You can change most of your details yourself on your account page;
- have your data deleted (Art. 17 GDPR), apart from what we must keep by law;
- restrict how we use your data (Art. 18 GDPR);
- object to any use based on our legitimate interest (Art. 21 GDPR);
- withdraw any consent you have given, at any time, with effect for the future (Art. 7(3) GDPR).
To use any of these rights, email tango@tangotopics.com.
You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority. The one responsible for us is the Berliner Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit, Alt-Moabit 59-61, 10555 Berlin, www.datenschutz-berlin.de.
Security
The whole site runs over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Passwords are stored encrypted. Card details never reach our server.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your data, we update this page and change the date at the top.
