Vals

Vals is one of the forms of music you’ll hear at a milonga alongside Tango and Milonga. It is typically written in 3/4 time (meaning 3 beats in a 4 beat measure) but usually played at 6/8 time (meaning double). Dancing to Vals is a whole different idea altogether: it flows and turns more than Tango does. There are typically only 3 ways to dance Vals from a counting perspective. Method #1 > Dancing on the 1. Method #2 > Dancing on the 1,3. Or method #3 > Dancing on the 1,2. Usually most dancers dance 1 or all 3 in a given song depending on whether or not the music calls for it.

There are two kinds of Vals. 1.) Straight Vals. Meaning that it’s counted as 1,2,3, 1,2,3 over and over and over again. OR 2.) Tango Vals which is Vals that intersperses Tango timing, so instead of 3/4 time, it would be 3/4 with 4/4 time.
