Coming to a Milonga for the first time, or even for the 100th, you may recognize a structure of the Milonga, a format if you will, that helps to organize the Milonga itself. And that format is called ‘The Line of Dance’. That ‘Line of Dance‘ is important to keeping things flowing in such a way that no one bumps into another. Accidents do happen but less so because of the Line of Dance format. This is sometimes called, ‘the Ronda’. It means the Line of Dance AROUND the floor. Typically the Line of Dance runs counter clockwise and generally has 4 entry points which tend to align with the 4 corners of the room. One uses those entry points to enter into the Line of Dance.
Contrary to what you might believe, you can NOT dance Tango with your partner wherever you want. As such we tend as dancers to want to ‘FOLLOW THE LINE OF DANCE‘. What does that mean ? It means that as a dancing couple you are following the couple in front of you, and they’re doing the same thing. This sort of keeps things going in the same direction at the same speed.
While you are Following the Line of Dance, we also want to adhere to another idea, which is more for the safety of everyone else that is either on the floor near you and for those people sitting close by. And that’s known as “KEEPING THINGS IN YOUR LANE of DANCE“. This means that any type of Tango vocabulary, step, patterns, or figures that you generate as a Lead, or as a Follow following what a Lead has asked of you, that must be kept within the constraints of the lane of dance that you’re in.
Sometimes at Milongas there are so many people that you need to form Lanes of Dance, not just a singular line of dance. We don’t set these up for you, most people self select and self create them because they see a need for them.
At our Milonga sometimes we have multiple lanes of dance, and sometimes not, but we would like people to keep their vocabulary choices and responses within the Line and Lane of Dance that they’re in. 😉
