The Open Embrace Molinete. This is the basis for the ‘default‘ turn in Argentine Tango that you see everywhere. However, once it’s taught, it’s almost never used because almost immediately thereafter we end up using the Close Embrace version of it. So the question arises, why learn it if you’re going to just end up using the Close Embrace version ? Because there are loads of options and opportunities that can be gained from learning it, that is why! Like for instance, there are host of sacadas, and ganchos that can derived from its usage. Still another is that when you have a Lead that’s being rather compressive with their embrace, you can invoke it. The same is true from the other side, when you’re dancing with a Follower that’s hanging everywhere, invoking an Open Embrace Molinete just to get some relief from the weight of their thudding movement is a godsend!
The turn itself, a molinete (pron: moh-lin-net-tay) consists of 4 steps (1 that repeats), Forward, Side (2), and Back. However, when we’re talking about the Molinete, we’re actually talking about 2 pieces of vocabulary that come together. 1.) The Follower’s Molinete. 2.) The Lead’s Giro. The movement itself is quite simple, however to do it well requires a deep understanding of the embrace, one’s walk, and applied disassociation.
This video shows Lead and Follower technique for the ‘how to’ that you need to know to improve your dance in Close Embrace dancing. It should be noted that while this video can teach you everything that you need to know, as well as showing you where the pitfalls of this movement are for both roles, you will still need to study with an instructor to get the kinesthetics aligned properly. This video should be used as reference while under the care and feeding of a qualified instructor.
