This, in my opinion, is a SOCIAL TANGO performance.
And in case you’re wondering who that ‘old folks’ are, that is Coco & Osvaldo. Youngsters as far as the ‘Milongueros’ go. But is worthy of the title because he, Osvaldo, came of age when the word was used as a disparagement! Which is NOT the Suzanna Miller marketing term to refer to a style of dance that she saw in BsAs when she was a tango baby that it has become.
Sadly in today’s tango world steps, patterns, figures are used in place of the one thing that you must understand and exercise > the 6 Ways of Walking! Most Leads and a whole swath of Follower teachers, in an effort to get students in their classes perform all manner of flashy vocabulary trickery to put shoes on their floor and money in their pockets. Hell! I’m even guilty of this. You gotta eat, right ? However, there is a much better way to exist in the tango world IMO without devolving to Steps, Patterns, and Figures that you can’t use on a Social Dance Floor!
I think that figures can have a usage, and that’s to train yourself for the purpose of facility but on the dance floor, in the ronda ? My rule has always been ONCE and then you let it go. Figures are spice, accent…they are NOT the dance! Which is to say, WALKING!
Pay close attention to the ‘nothing’ things he does. Simple. Clean. Clear. Note that he employs walking ONLY, nothing more than that. This, my friends, is what SOCIAL TANGO can be.
Thanks to Tom Stermitz for finding Ray Barbosa’s original post!
