Today’s #Tango Thought 047: Classes are great. For Leads.
For Followers ? No. Why ? Because the Follower doesn’t need to know the ‘step’, ‘pattern’, or ‘figure’. They DO need to be familiar with the sensation or the indication of what X, Y, and Z is but not the step itself. Classes are more about familiarity than anything else. This is not true when it comes to colgadas, volcadas, soltadas, wraps, ganchos, and voleos. Why ? Because those pieces of tango vocabulary are not just forward, side, back. They’re something very specific and require something else.
Don’t mishear this as sexist tripe from a male dancer who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. The fact is that I teach both genders to follow and lead and then to lead and follow at the same time. So I am well versed in role swapping, as I do it myself quite frequently. Instead hear this as what I know to be true, that time spent in classes for you, in the role of the Follower are better spent in private study with a teacher that can individually tailor a study plan for you and your skill set. Hear this as the only real benefit to classes for you is getting to know people. Hear this as the beneficiary of classes is rightfully the lead. As they get to practice and try out every thing. While you get to practice the same thing over and over again. Which can have its benefits from time to time, but generally you are better served spending class time in private instruction. #SocialTango #SocialDance #ArgentineTango #TangoDancing
